Retail products only carry UL 588 certification, which defines seasonal use as a period not exceeding 90 days. They aren’t rated for heavy weather, heavy power loads, or UV exposure, and they certainly aren’t rated for commercial installations that often begin in late October and run well past New Year's Day. That means a retail-grade strand, if put into the wrong context, can exceed its lifetime before Christmas even arrives. At best, that leads to outages, callbacks, and a loss of reputation; at worst, it leads to fire hazards and a loss of human life.
Fixed-length strings compound the problem further. Retail strands come pre-cut at standard lengths (typically 25 or 50 feet) which forces contractors to mix multiple strings, multiplying connection points and failure opportunities. Professional christmas lights sourced from commercial spools, by contrast, allow you to cut exactly to the roofline, the column, or the fascia, eliminating unnecessary joints and producing a cleaner result.
Retail products also typically use non-sealed LED housings. When moisture infiltrates an unsealed socket through freeze-thaw cycles, a single failed bulb can cascade across an entire section. Commercial-grade housings use sealed, weatherproof construction that holds up against sustained exposure.

Essential LED Bulb Types: C9, C7, and Wide Angle
Let’s quickly go down the primary options for bulbs:

C9 bulbs remain the industry standard for rooflines, ridge lines, and perimeter lighting. Their larger form factor (typically an E17 base) throws light at a wider angle and reads clearly from street level, which is exactly what residential and commercial clients are paying for.

C7 bulbs aren’t general-use, since they serve a distinct purpose. Their smaller E12 base and reduced profile make them the better fit for dormers, window frames, columns, and tighter architectural details where a C9 would look oversized or cluttered.

Wide Angle Conical LEDs are the superior choice for trees, shrubs, and greenery. Their conical lens disperses light at roughly 140 degrees, wrapping branches evenly rather than casting a narrow beam.
On all three bulb types, faceted lenses outperform smooth shells for refraction. The faceted surface scatters light into multiple reflection points, creating depth and sparkle rather than a flat glow (although the flat look can be preferable in certain instances).

C9 bulk spools are typically available in 250', 500', and 1,000' reels, giving crews the flexibility to cut exactly what a property requires. SPT-1 wire is the standard for almost all installations, and, 99% of the time, is what you should stick with. SPT-1 features thinner insulation suited to mild climates, but is ultimately still fairly robust, flexible, and easy to use. SPT-2 wire, conversely, uses heavier-gauge insulation that resists cracking in certain sustained freezing temperatures… but is very tedious to use, and is by and large an outdated standard (especially since modern LED systems reduce power draw enough that SPT-1 handles almost all cases just fine). There are a handful of situations where SPT-2 works well for multi-season use, but we recommend SPT-1 almost every time.
Vampire plugs, or slide-on connectors, complete the system by eliminating the pre-molded plugs that create bulk and visual noise. These connectors pierce the wire insulation and lock in place without cutting — meaning you can position a socket or terminate a run at any point along the spool. The result is a cleaner look with no excess cord draped across gutters or bundled near outlets.
Custom-cut wire also has a practical electrical benefit: shorter runs mean lower resistance and reduced risk of overloading a single circuit. Contractors who size each run deliberately tend to see fewer service calls related to tripped breakers.
